0-5 Year Olds In Greater Western Sydney – May 2025

The 0-5 year old age group is one of the priority groups under the Targeted Earlier Intervention (TEI) Program of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). This is in recognition of the first 2,000 days of life as a crucial period for a person’s development, particularly for physical, social, emotional, and cognitive health. This period starts at conception to around five years of age. Evidence has found that the early years of a person’s life are predictors of success in education and employment, as well as overall health.

This report discusses demographic variables that may impact the development of children within this age group, from sex, Indigenous status, and cultural diversity to variables related to family structure and housing. The data from this report was sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2021 Census of Population and Housing through TableBuilder Pro and simultaneously references results from the 2016 Census. It also uses data from HealthStats NSW.

With the TEI recommissioning process underway, this paper aims to support communities, community organisations, and government agencies in GWS and their programs and activities by providing information on this specific age group.
